Dear Parents,

Hello! My name is Michaela Gower. I will be teaching reading, writing, math, and science. This is my second year teaching at Roosevelt Elementary. I am so excited for the upcoming school year, and to get to know each student!

I am looking forward to integrating the Reading and Writing Workshop curriculum into the classroom. The format includes a mini lesson, which focuses on a strategy that students can utilize in their reading or writing. Another important aspect of this curriculum is that it provides ample opportunities for students to read and write. I will meet with readers and writers for conferences throughout each of the units of study. I truly look forward to bringing both of these programs into action and seeing how students grow as both readers and writers!

In math, we will be utilizing the Go Math series. Each lesson will be taught in a whole group format. Next, depending on the skill, students will spend time in groups or with partners reviewing the concept, before working independently on the skill. The Roosevelt 5th Grade website has links for math help and is broken down by chapter. Please utilize this resource. In addition, I will notify students of additional resources pertaining to the various math concepts, as we progress through the year.

For science, we will be utilizing a program called Mystery Science, as well as Discovery Works. Mystery Science includes units that are broken down into mysteries which are all aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. The units for Grade 5 that we will be focusing on are as follows: Chemical Magic, Web of Life, Watery Planet, and Spaceship Earth. Assessments will be built into each unit, and grades will also be based on participation and daily work. Projects will also be integrated within the units.

I am looking forward to working with your child, and to a year full of learning! To stay up-to-date with all things 5th grade, utilize the Roosevelt 5th Grade website and the SeeSaw app. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school (785) 623-2520, or by e-mail at
